TED Talk 1- Every Kid Needs a Champion
I picked this TED talk because I find relationships important. I always learn and respond better when I like and respect the person I'm learning from. Because of that, I try to be someone my own students can like and respect so they too can do their best learning. That's what Rita Pierson speaks about in her talk. Students won't learn well if they don't like you. Teachers need to be there for their students, they need to stand behind them and support them. They not only have to teach them the curriculum, they have to keep their spirits up and raise their self-esteem so the students believe that they can learn. Good teachers teach for more than just that year, they teach to make a difference, they teach so their words can help a student down the road.
I really enjoyed Rita's point that you don't learn from somebody you don't like. Looking back on my own schooling, the classes I liked the best and where I learned the best were taught by people I liked. Those teachers made me feel less shy and awkward, I didn't feel self conscious about my work. They made me feel validated, and I learned best from them.
